Understanding the Root–Microbiome Connection
Our laboratory studies the rhizosphere, the dynamic zone of soil surrounding plant roots, and the continual exchange between roots, microbes, and nutrients that takes place there. Using approaches that span root exudate chemistry, microbiome analysis, and plant genetics, we investigate how plants recruit and shape their microbial communities, and how those communities affect resource acquisition, soil health, and crop resilience. From tomato domestication to phosphorus and zinc solubilization by soil microbes, our work seeks to harness beneficial root–microbe relationships to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.

We are firm believers that a combined understanding of root–microbiome interactions can reshape how we grow food. By decoding the signals plants and microbes exchange belowground, we aim to develop new strategies for nutrient management, soil restoration, and sustainable crop production.
