Temple Grandin Equine Center Research

The Temple Grandin Equine Center conducts research to advance science supporting equine-assisted services. Our research falls within four domains that offer something different, yet necessary, to the field. Beyond our research, we provide equine assisted services to our local communities to help those with needs create new bonds and succeed. Together, these practices create a holistic research and outreach center.

If you're interested in financially supporting research and outreach at the Temple Grandin Equine Center, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Caiti Peters at caiti.peters@colostate.edu

Our Research: Four Domains

Our research focuses on our four domains:

1) Systematic Reviews: These are reviews that assemble existing research on specific topics related to equine-assisted services (e.g., equine-assisted services for autistic individuals) to find strengths and areas of weakness in existing research. This aims to guide practice and future research.

2) Efficacy Research: TGEC researches the efficacy of specific equine-assisted services for various populations. Our largest program of efficacy research focuses on occupational therapy integrating horses for autistic children.

3) Industry-focused research: We work with industry leaders such as the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International and the American Hippotherapy Association to tackle industry problems, such as a past initiative to lead new recommendations for optimum terminology in equine-assisted services.

4) Equine Care, Training, and Welfare: We conduct research investigating the effects of equine-assisted services on equine physiology and behavior, in order to guide equine care, training, and workload decisions for equine-assisted services horses.
