Ham - Micrometeorology Lab

Led by Professor Jay Ham of the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, our lab studies how water, carbon, and energy move between the land surface and the atmosphere and builds the instruments that measure it. Our work spans sensor and instrumentation development, surface–atmosphere exchange, and water and air quality issues in agricultural and natural systems. From Internet-of-Things sap flow gauges to real-time sensor networks and low-cost soil moisture probes, we develop open, accessible technologies that bring better environmental data to researchers, growers, and communities.

Instrumentation for a Changing Environment

Our research combines micrometeorology with hands-on instrumentation development to better understand the exchange of water, carbon, and energy between the surface and the atmosphere. Current projects include Internet-of-Things sap flow gauges, real-time data-broadcasting sensor networks, and novel low-cost soil moisture sensors, many designed to be open-source and affordable so that advanced measurement reaches places and people it otherwise wouldn't. This work supports smarter irrigation, improved water and air quality monitoring, and a clearer picture of how agricultural landscapes interact with the atmosphere.

Smart, Low-Cost Sensing for Everyone

We believe good environmental data shouldn't be out of reach. From a smart irrigation system for home gardens to open-source, low-cost sensor designs, our lab develops technologies that put reliable measurement into the hands of growers, researchers, and communities, all with a real impact on how water and land are managed.
