Deiss - Soil Nutrient Management Lab

We work at the intersection of ecology, agriculture, and soil science. Through science and education, we help develop and implement resilient agricultural systems designed to enhance ecological processes, optimize use of biotic and abiotic resources, and promote nutrient-dense food production that supports human nutrition and well-being. Our research focuses on soil health, biogeochemistry, and nutrient cycling to understand soil organic matter and C–N–P dynamics, nutrient pools, biogeochemical fluxes, and the microbiome. We advance regenerative agricultural systems and ecological intensification by integrating reduced tillage, cover crops, diversified crop rotations, perenniality, and integrated crop-livestock systems. Ultimately, we link soil, plant, and animal processes to innovative strategies that benefit farmers, ecosystems, and society.

Research Projects

The Soil Nutrient Management Lab at Colorado State University advances practical, science-based solutions for nutrient management, soil health, and resilient cropping systems in semi-arid environments. Our work integrates field trials, high-throughput spectroscopy, biogeochemical assays, and stakeholder engagement to improve productivity, environmental outcomes, and the nutritional quality of food and feed.

Research in Action

Our work extends beyond the lab and field. Through research publications, educational resources and partnerships, the Soil Nutrient Management Lab translates soil and nutrient science into practical tools for producers, advisers, students and communities. Explore recent projects and resources showing how our research is helping address challenges ranging from nutrient management and water availability to soil health and agricultural resilience across Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West.
