Cranshaw - Colorado Insect Resources

This site is built on the entomology research and extension program of Professor Whitney Cranshaw and serves as a comprehensive resource on the insects and arthropods that affect horticultural crops across Colorado. The collection spans integrated pest management, and includes the CSU Hemp Insect resource, a practical guide to the insects and mites found on hemp. From the Colorado Bug Mugs image guides to foundational work on thousand cankers disease of walnut trees, these fact sheets, images, and diagnostic tools remain a trusted reference for growers, gardeners, and pest managers throughout the region and beyond.

Integrated Pest Management for Horticultural Crops

Dr. Cranshaw's research and extension program addressed the integrated pest management of arthropods affecting horticultural commodities throughout Colorado. Much of his work focused on the practical diagnosis and management of insect pests for growers and gardeners, alongside teaching and outreach that reached audiences well beyond the university. Following the 2008 description of thousand cankers disease of walnut, the lab devoted considerable effort to understanding this emerging threat. Its extension fact sheets, image libraries, and diagnostic guides — including the Colorado Bug Mugs and Arthropods of Colorado — remain enduring resources for the state.

The Colorado Hemp Insect Resource

The lab also developed the CSU Hemp Insect website, a practical guide to the insects, mites, and other arthropods found on hemp. It brings together fact sheets, an image library, pesticide and regulatory information, and management recommendations to help hemp producers recognize and respond to the pests they encounter in the field.
