Multi-Functional Farming Systems and Soil Health

Our lab seeks to assess the multifunctionality of soils and agroecosystems. Essentially, we evaluate the performance of farming systems by examining yields and profitability together with an array of ecosystem services such as erosion control, nutrient cycling and provision, carbon sequestration, pest regulation, water capture and storage, among others.

Managing and Understanding Soil Biology and Biodiversity

Soils are thought to comprise over 50% of global biodiversity, yet most soil organisms and their effects on multiple soil functions remain poorly understood. Our research examines soil biological communities and how soil management influences the activity and abundance of soil organisms.

Participatory Research with Farmers

Much of our work is done in close collaboration with farmers and other stakeholders through participatory research approaches. This work often involves working closely with farmers to determine the problems to be addressed and possible solutions to be studied, as well as the co-design of field trials that are typically located in farmers’ fields.
